Swiss Steak
Swiss Steak is a a budget friendly meal made with chuck steak that is slow simmered in a tomato sauce with carrots, onions, garlic and bell peppers. Perfect comfort food to serve over mashed potatoes.

Swiss Steak ~ Budget Friendly Comfort Food
Swiss steak is a tasty meal that is a family favorite for any day of the week. The steak is falling apart tender in a hearty tomato sauce that is so good served over creamy mashed potatoes.
Ingredients Needed:
- Boneless Chuck Steak or Round Steak
- All Purpose Flour
- Kosher Salt
- Black Pepper
- Olive Oil
- Diced Onions
- Minced Garlic
- Diced Bell Peppers
- Shredded Carrots
- Tomato Sauce
- Water
- Dried Oregano
- Dried Thyme
- Dried Basil
How to Make Swiss Steak:
Pound steak to about 1/4 inch thick using a meat mallet.
- Dredge steak into flour on both sides and season with salt and pepper.
- Add olive oil to a dutch oven or deep skillet and place over medium heat.
- When oil is hot, add the steak and cook about 5 minutes per side until well browned.
- Remove to steak and set aside.
- Add more olive oil to the skillet and cook onions, garlic, bell peppers and carrots over medium heat, stirring often. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 10 minutes.
- Add tomato sauce and water, stirring to combine.
- Season with salt, pepper, oregano, thyme and basil, stirring until combined.
- Return steak to the pan and cover with sauce, cooking for about 5 minutes.
- Cover and lower to simmer.
- Cook 30 minutes to 1 hour until steak is tender.
- Remove steak to a cutting board and slice thin or shred.
- Return to sauce and stir well.
- Serve steak and sauce over mashed potatoes, rice or pasta.

- Storage: Store leftover steak in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
- Reheat: Add steak and sauce to a pan and cook over medium heat, stirring often until heated through.
