Irish Brown Bread

Irish Brown Bread is a simple quick bread that is so easy to make from scratch. A dense, hearty bread with just a touch of sweetness.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats, plus more for sprinkling
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 bottle 12 oz Guinness extra stout beer, room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 5 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • Non stick cooking spray
  • Kerrygold Butter for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°.
  2. In a large mixing bowl combine whole wheat flour, oats, all purpose flour, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
  3. In another bowl whisk together Guinness, buttermilk and molasses .
  4. Stir into dry ingredients with a dough whisk or wooden spoon until well combined.
  5. Coat a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan with non stick cooking spray.
  6. Pour batter into pan and spread evenly.
  7. Sprinkle a tablespoon or two of oats over the top.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove from oven and run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen.
  10. Slide loaf out onto a wire rack to cool.
  11. Slice while warm or at room temperature and serve with butter.

Notes

Wrap cooled bread in plastic wrap and store at room temperature up to 2 days. Can be refrigerated up to 4 days.

Reheat slices by lightly toasting.
